William Thomson, son of Judge Alexander and
Jane Graham Thomson was the great-grandson of
Alexander and Elizabeth. William graduated from the
Jefferson Medical College in 1855 and opened his
practice in Merion, near Philadelphia. In 1861 he
entered the regular army as assistant surgeon. In 1864,
William was named to the post of Medical Inspector of
the Department of Washington. In 1866 he returned to
private practice in Philadelphia.
Dr. Thomson’s place in medical history was
assured when he simplified the Holmgren Test for
color-blindness.
