This is the story of Ann King, (twin sister of Mary King Queen,
the wife of Richard T. Queen), Isabella King, Ann’s cousin; and
Josephine Barber, also related to the Kings and the Queens.
Ann King
Ann was raised in the privileged social class of
Georgetown, D.C. Her father, Adam King, was a successful
lawyer, merchant and land speculator. Her mother, Grace
Doyle, was the daughter of another Georgetown scion,
Alexander Doyle, publisher, merchant, landowner in Colonial
Virginia and Maryland, and philanthropist.
It can be assumed that Ann, her sister Mary and her
brother James lived a childhood where things Catholic were
strongly revered. Mary and Ann were educated at the
Visitation Academy and James attended Georgetown College.
Ann King decided early that she wanted to join the
Visitation community. She petitioned Bishop Leonard Neale
for permission to be admitted to the monastery. Bishop
Neale told Mary she was too young to make such a serious
