It is well documented in the early chronicles
that the second Episcopal chapel built in the colony
was a log structure constructed in 1639 by Thomas
Gerard for his Protestant wife. The chapel was located
near St. Patrick's Creek.
It is just as well chronicled that on the morning
of March 23, 1641 Gerard marched to the chapel,
removed and buried the Books of Worship, locked the
door and confiscated the key.
In 1722 the original log church was
replaced with a sturdier structure.
