The colony of Maryland, to which Susanna did
finally immigrate in 1650, was an immense land an
eternal ocean away from a crowded, decaying England.
Blue skies created an amazing contrast to the normal
London grey. Food was plentiful: lobsters, crabs and
oysters shared the waterways while beaver, deer,
bear, and turkey shared the forests. A newly arrived
colonist wrote home that in the rivers fish jump as if
they are eager to be caught and tasted.
